I am not sure about you but I have to assess my child's needs regularly to see if I am offering the tools needed to be as independent as possible. When we have children with identified disabilities we sometimes allow excuses to lead our children into a world of dependence and learned helplessness. I believe we can do better. We can offer some of the simplest accommodations for them to start moving toward independence. Today I will share items I have found that helped my child become more independent.
He has this beautiful memory and amazing interest but doing the basic functional activities are the most challenging for him. He loves chocolate milk and I wanted to use that as a motivator for him to have more independence. I found these 17 oz bottles that looked like milk cartons to fill with milk, funnel to assist with adding chocolate powder to his cup and cups that were easy for him too close and drink from.
